Homeownership is a Team Effort!
Enrique FloresWe’ve all heard the saying, “It takes a village.” When it comes to buying a home, that statement couldn’t be more accurate.
While most of us aren’t literally building our homes brick by brick anymore, we are still building the foundation that makes homeownership possible — our income, credit, savings, and stability. These things take time, effort, and discipline. And rarely do we do it all alone. Many people today purchase homes with the help of a partner, spouse, parent, or family member.
That’s an important point to remember, especially as home prices continue to outpace income growth — one of the key factors in qualifying for a mortgage. For many buyers, qualifying alone has become increasingly difficult. Having another person on the application, whether it’s a spouse, partner, or co-borrower, can make the difference between a dream deferred and a home purchased.
But your “village” doesn’t stop there. It also includes the professionals who help guide you through the process — your loan officer and your real estate agent. Together, their experience, understanding, and strategy combine with your goals to create a path toward qualification and homeownership. They help you see options you might not have realized were possible and structure your loan in a way that works with your income, credit, debts, and assets.
Over the years, I’ve helped countless families achieve homeownership alongside their real estate agents. Many of them might never have believed it was possible without the right guidance and teamwork behind them.
One story that stands out is a family who needed nearly $50,000 to buy their first home — but had less than $10,000 saved. On paper, it looked impossible. But instead of telling them “no,” we got to work. By strategically using programs, negotiating effectively, and building a plan that respected both their needs and financial limits, they closed on their home. Their wants were met, their budget was respected, and their dream became reality.
Homeownership isn’t just about numbers on a loan application. It’s about people, teamwork, and belief. It takes effort, guidance, and yes — a village.
