How To Boost Your Credit!

Enrique Flores

Over the past few weeks, I have been spending more time studying practical and realistic ways to improve your credit score—approaches that do not cost a lot of money, are not complicated, and do not require hiring a credit repair company or outside help. These are simple strategies that everyday people can actually use, and ones I feel confident sharing with my clients.

One of the first steps is to contact your credit card companies and ask whether you qualify for a credit limit increase. Before allowing them to submit the request, always ask if it will require a hard credit inquiry. If a hard pull is required, it is usually best to skip that card for now and move on to the ones that only require a soft pull or no pull at all. Increasing your available credit can lower your overall utilization, which is one of the biggest factors in your credit score.

Another helpful strategy is becoming an authorized user on a trusted family member’s credit card, if that option is available. Before being added, it can help if that person requests a credit limit increase on their card first. When you are added, you may benefit from the higher limit and positive payment history. It is very important that the card has low balances and consistent on-time payments, because high utilization or late payments can hurt rather than help.

It is also important to regularly monitor your credit so you understand what is helping or hurting your score. Downloading a free credit monitoring app such as CreditWise can make this easier. It allows you to track your score, see changes over time, and stay informed without paying for expensive services.

These steps are not quick fixes, but when done correctly and consistently, they can lead to meaningful improvements over time. The key is patience, organization, and focusing on habits that build strong credit rather than shortcuts that often cost money and create more problems later.
